Jardín is one of the best places in Colombia to see the Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus), an intensely orange-red bird famous for its courtship display. This guide tells you where, when and how to see it.
What is the cock-of-the-rock?
It's one of the most spectacular birds in the Andes: the male shows off bright orange plumage and gathers with other males at a "lek" (display area) to impress females with hops, wing flaps and calls. Seeing it in its natural habitat is a unique experience, and in Jardín it can often be seen up close.
Where to see the cock-of-the-rock in Jardín?
At the cock-of-the-rock reserve, a few minutes from the town center. It's a conservation area where the birds come regularly, which makes a sighting very likely.
What is the best time?
The two key moments of the day are:
- Dawn (around 6:00 a.m.)
- Dusk (between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m.)
At those times the males are most active at the lek. Arriving on time makes a difference.
Do I need binoculars or experience?
